Édifices ruraux à tour de Palestine hellénistique : parallèles à Qumrân

Afin de retracer la genèse du site de Qumrân, caractérisé par une puissante tour d’angle, il s’agit d’une part de déterminer la fonction de ce type d’édifices et celle de leurs tours, d’autre part l’origine du modèle. Local ou exogène, il est en effet largement répandu dans le monde hellénistique et romain. Malgré le faible nombre de sites pour lesquels on dispose d’informations complètes, trois groupes ont pu être distingués : fermes modestes à tours simples ; grosses fermes dotées d’une tour à quatre pièces ; vastes et luxueuses demeures d’agrément dont la tour présente une organisation complexe. Selon le groupe, la fonction principale de la tour est différenciée, respectivement : surveillance du domaine agricole, habitation, et lieu d’agrément. L’avant-mur qui caractérise souvent la tour dans les deux derniers groupes peut, en plus d’assurer une fonction de stabilisation et de sécurisation, avoir été un marqueur de prestige ; ce sont peut-être ces édifices que désignait le terme « bâris ». Seules les belles demeures du troisième groupe présentent clairement des éléments d’inspiration gréco-romaine ; elles apparaissent au tournant de notre ère, quand les édifices du second groupe semblent se raréfier.

In the hopes of understanding the genesis of the site of Qumran, characterized by its large corner tower, we attempted to determine, as it regards rural civil edifices with towers in Greek Palestine, both their function and that of their towers, and the origin of the model (local or exogenous, this type being frequent in the Greek and Roman worlds). Despite our only having complete information for a small group of sites, we can nonetheless distinguish three groups: modest farms with simple towers; large farms with four-room towers; and finally, vast and luxurious leisure estates with more complexly organized towers. According to this categorization, the principal function of the tower is, respectively, to allow for surveillance of the farm; to be inhabited; or, to serve as a place of leisure. The fore-wall that often characterizes the tower in the latter two groups may not only serve to provide stability and security, but also be a marker of prestige; these edifices may be those designated by the term “baris”. Only the luxurious manors of the third group have elements that are clearly Greco-Roman; they appear around the beginning of the Common Era, when the edifices of the second group seem to become less frequent.

في سبيل عرض تكون موقع قمران، الذي يميزه برج زاوية منيع، سعينا - فيما يخص المباني المدنية الريفية ذات البرج في فلسطين الهلنستية - إلى تحديد : من ناحية، وظيفتها و وظيفة أبراجها، و من ناحية أخرى أصل النموذج (محلياً كان أو خارجي المنشأ، فقد انتشر هذا النوع من المباني على نطاق واسع في العالم الهلنستي و الروماني).على الرغم من ضآلة عدد المواقع التي نملك عنها معلومات وافية، أمكن تمييز ثلاث مجموعات : مزارع متواضعة ذات أبراج  بسيطة؛ مزارع ضخمة مزودة ببرج ذي أربع غرف؛ بيوت فسيحة و فاخرة للترفيه و التي يظهر البرج فيها تنظيماً معقداً. تبعاً للمجموعة،  تتمايز الوظيفة الرئيسية للبرج، على التوالي : مراقبة و حراسة الأملاك الزراعية، السكن، و مكان للترفيه.يمكن للجدار الأمامي الذي غالباً ما يميز البرج في المجموعتين الأخيرتين، بالإضافة إلى تأمين وظيفة الاستقرار و الأمان، يمكن أن يكون علامة هيبة؛ و قد تكون هذه المباني هي التي يشير إليها مصطلح "باريز" (bâris).وحدها بيوت المجموعة الثالثة أبرزت بوضوح عناصر ذات إيحاء يوناني-روماني؛ و تظهر في مطلع الفترة الميلادية، حين تبدو مباني المجموعة الثانية أكثر ندرة.
