The history of the Austrian national exhibition dates back to 1978, when the first Austrian exhibition was opened in Block 17 at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. Its story cannot be told in isolation from that of the concentration camp, however, since Block 17 was a former prisoner block at the camp.
