Il s’agit d’un compte rendu de l’ouvrage du photographe-historien Arno Gisinger (Topoï, Trans Photographic Press / Bucher Verlag, 2013, 335 p., 49 €). Y sont exposés ses travaux des vingt dernières années portant sur un très grand nombre de mémoires : mémoires de victimes du nazisme (victimes juives, civiles et nomades), mémoires de résistants (Indices), d’exécuteurs (les deux projets consacrés à Nuremberg), mais aussi la mémoire du fascisme italien (Siegesdenkmal), et la commémoration de « héros » récents (Plan américain). Comme le faisaient déjà ses expositions, cet ouvrage invite à questionner la mémoire, ici par le biais d’un choix de photograhies, de textes poétiques et d’un commentaire d’expert. Le compte rendu tente de saisir la qualité heuristique de ce travail photographique.

This is a review of photographer-historian Arno Gisinger’s book Topoï. It presents his work from the last twenty years centred around a great number of “memories”: memories of the victims of Nazism (Jewish, civil and nomadic victims), memories of members of the Resistance (Indices), executioners (two projects dedicated to Nuremberg), but also the memory of Italian Fascism (Siegesdenkmal), and the commemoration of recent “heroes” (Plan américain). In the same way as his exhibitions, Gisinger’s book encourages the questioning of memory, here precisely through a choice of photographs, poetic texts and commentary by specialists. The review seeks to grasp the heuristic quality of this photographic work.

Dit artikel is een recensie van Topoï, het boek van fotograaf en historicus Arno Gisinger. Topoï bevat een overzicht van zijn werken uit de laatste twintig jaar, waarin herinnering centraal staat: herinneringen van de slachtoffers van het nazisme (Joden, burgers en nomaden), herinneringen van verzetsleden (Indices) en daders (twee projecten gewijd aan Neurenberg), maar ook de herinnering aan het Italiaanse fascisme (Siegesdenkmal) en de herdenking van recentere ‘helden’ (Plan américain). Net als in Gisingers tentoonstellingen zet het boek aan tot reflectie over de herinnering, hier door middel van een selectie van foto’s, poëtische teksten en commentaar van experts. De recensie tracht de heuristische waarde te vatten van het fotografische werk.
