Le présent article cherche à explorer l’œuvre cinématographique de Rithy Panh pour en comprendre les enjeux mémoriels. Lui-même rescapé des camps de Khmers rouges, le réalisateur reconstruit l’histoire récente du Cambodge. Mais cette histoire est aussi la sienne. Aussi a-t-il longuement interrogé Duch, responsable du camp d’extermination S21, juste avant le procès de ce dernier. Cette confrontation a donné lieu à un livre coécrit avec Christophe Bataille, L’Élimination, ainsi qu’à un film Duch, le maître des forges de l’enfer. La réflexion sur ce véritable diptyque mémoriel revêt une double problématique cinématographique et personnelle.

The present article sets out to study the cinematographic oeuvre of Rithy Panh in order to understand its relevance as a work of memory. A survivor of the Khmer Rouge camps, the film maker reconstructs not only the recent history of Cambodia, but also his own. He conducted a long interview with Duch, head of the extermination camp S21, only weeks before the start of the man’s trial. The confrontation resulted in a book Rithy Panh wrote together with Christophe Bataille, L’Élimination, and a film, Douch, le maître des forges de l’enfer. The analysis of this memorial diptych underscores its importance both as a cinematographic work and a personal testimony.

In dit artikel wordt het filmwerk van Rithy Panh bestudeerd om te begrijpen wat daarin betreffende het geheugen op het spel staat. De regisseur, zelf een overlevende van de Rode Khmerkampen, reconstrueert de recente Cambodjaanse geschiedenis, maar dat is meteen ook zijn eigen geschiedenis. Zo ondervroeg hij langdurig Duch, de baas van het vernietigingskamp S-21, net voor die werd berecht. Die confrontatie mondde uit in een boek dat hij samen met Christophe Bataille schreef, namelijk L’élimination, en ook in de film Duch, le maître des forges de l’enfer. De reflectie over dat onvervalste tweeluik van het geheugen is zowel filmisch als persoonlijk relevant.
