Tobacco consumption in the Ottoman Empire began in the early 17th century. The plant was imported by European sailors into the empire through Istanbul and Cairo (De Vincenz, 2016, p. 118). Initially banned by several decrees (François et al., 2012, p. 487), consumption and production were finally accepted in the mid-17th century.
