Many contributions to this blog convincingly show that the Middle Ages (or, more generally, the premodern period) were quite familiar with the figure of the «hermaphrodite» as well as with a range of physiological aspects of sexualities that cannot easily and clearly be categorized in a bipolar system of «male» and «female». Less frequently addressed, however, seems to be the question how these phenomena can be explained? How does nature produce individuals who either lack the primary marker...
