Résumé 0

In the present dissertation we will study the image of multiplicity and diffraction in Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim and within the character of Lord Jim. Several topics are to be dealt with, for instance we will see how Conrad turns the Romantic hero and colonialism into myths and how he deconstructs them afterwards, how the presence of doubles in the story triggers off identity crisis. We will also analyse the use of mimesis in the novel along with Conrad's eternal search for verisimilitude and the discovery of the right word. Thus, we shall try to demonstrate how Jim's and the book's tendencies to multiplicity and diffraction unearth a multitude of layers of reading, enabling us to proclaim this novel one of the most modern and complex stories of the late 19th century.
