Some effects of the phonological background on EFL phonetic production, among students of LLCER M2

The pronunciation of the second language has been under the scope of scholars ever since the 1950s. It was studied in terms of the implication of the native language on it as well as the intermingling relationship between the two languages. When it comes to the effects of the phenomenon of transfer in an environment where French is an L1 and English is an L2, we have compared the phonological production of 6 LLCER M2 students and arrived at the conclusion that transfer has a majorly negative impact on the pronunciation of English vowels. On the other hand, consonants that are similar in both languages were responsible for high amounts of positive transfer, but consonants that do not exist in the French phonological background caused medium levels of negative transfer. Moreover, some of the errors registered could be recognised as fossilised pronunciation due the fact that they are produced by advanced learners who have presumably completed their pronunciation learning phase.
