Investissant le cadre théorique des premiers romantiques, celui d’un art exposant l’absolu, Walter Benjamin en corrode l’unité. Pour ce faire, il introduit un concept- Witz, « l’ironie objective ». Sa différence se détermine, non comme dissolution de la forme de l’œuvre, ajustement de celle-ci à l’absolu de l’art, mais comme l’interruption de l’apparence à même la forme. Cette rupture singulière contracte en elle la dimension de la critique, si bien que celle-ci n’est plus achèvement de l’œuvre mais son interruption, un retournement de la forme contre elle-même, contre sa propre clôture.

Taking up the theoretical framework of the first romantics, that of an art exposing the absolute, Walter Benjamin ruins its unity. To do this, he introduces a wit-concept, « objective irony ». Its difference is established not as the dissolution of the form of the work, adjustment of the work and the absolute of art, but as an interruption of appearance within the form itself. This singular break comprehends the dimension of criticism, so that criticism is no longer the accomplishment of the work but its discontinuity, a turning against itself of the form, against its own closure.
