Three seasons of excavations from 2011 to 2013, at the Lac-de-Capelles in Narbonne (France) have brought to light an exceptional circular building identified as a Roman piscina, dated to the Augustan Period and recently placed on the list of « Monuments Historiques ». The circular basin is 67 m in diameter and a rectangular building built in its centre has been interpreted as a summer triclinum. Inside the triclinium a secondary and very well conserved fishpond has been excavated with in situ fish bones. This type of luxurious structure is usually found along the Italian coast associated with the villae maritimae of the Late Republican and Early Imperial aristocracy. The presence of this piscina in Narbonne allows us to suggest its association with the villa belonging to one of the most important Roman characters in the capital of the province of Gallia Narbonensis.

Trois campagnes de fouilles, entre 2011 et 2013, au Lac-de-Capelles à Narbonne (France), ont permis la découverte d’une structure circulaire exceptionnelle identifiée comme une piscina romaine datée de la période augustéenne et récemment inscrite sur la liste des Monuments Historiques. Le bassin circulaire a un diamètre de 67 m et un bâtiment rectangulaire construit au milieu est identifié comme un triclinium estival. À l’intérieur de ce triclinium, un bassin secondaire, très bien conservé, a été fouillé et a livré les ossements des poissons conservés in situ. Ce type de structure luxueuse est habituel de la côte italienne où il est associé aux villae maritimae de l’aristocratie tardo-républicaine et haute-impériale. La présence de cette piscina à Narbonne suggère un lien avec l’un des plus importants personnages de la capitale de Gaule narbonnaise.
