How to Uproot a Mandrake: Reciprocity of Knowledge between Europe, the Middle East, and China

Study on the textual and iconographic motifs of the uprooting of the mandrake by a dog. Beyond the falsely superficial aspect of this theme, the aim is to study this motif as a case study of transmission from the ancient West to the contemporary Far East, from ancient botanical texts (Flavius Josephus, Dioscorides, Herbarium of the Pseudo-Apuleius) to texts on mandrakes in medieval Latin botanical works (5th-15th c.), and through Arabic texts, as well as through Indian, Chinese and Japanese "folkloric" texts.

Etude sur les motifs textuel et iconographique de la cueillette de la mandragore par un chien. Au-delà de l’aspect faussement superficiel de cette thématique, il s'agit d’étudier ce motif comme "cas d'école" de transmission depuis l’Occident antique jusqu’en extrême-Orient contemporain, depuis les textes botaniques antiques (Flavius Josèphe, Dioscoride, Herbarium du Pseudo-Apulée) en passant par les notices sur la mandragore dans les ouvrages botaniques médiévaux latins (5e-15e s.) et par les textes arabes, jusqu‘aux textes indiens et chinois et japonais.
