Plato, while introducing mathematical sciences, and arithmetic in particular, into the education programme of the guardians, in the seventh book of the Republic, and of the citizens, in the seventh book of the Laws, also confers them a practical aim belonging to the art of war. This paper suggests that this aspect should be contextualized within a popular mathematical culture associating games, calculus and Homeric heroes. Military mathematics so understood, in their playful and concrete environment, offer a base upon which might even arise the philosophical approach that is supposed to reform mathematical training according to the Republic. On such a basis, we will introduce the hypothesis that the representation of the task of marshalling troops in the Homeric poems can help us reinterpret the mathematical games used to introduce arithmetic to children in Laws VII (819a8-c7).

Platon, en présentant les sciences mathématiques (et parmi celles-ci en particulier l’arithmétique) destinées à l’éducation des gardiens, au livre VII de la République, et des citoyens, au livre VII des Lois, reconnaît aussi à celles-ci une finalité pratique relevant de l’art de la guerre. Il est proposé de situer cette finalité dans le contexte d’une culture mathématique populaire, qui associe les jeux, le calcul et les héros homériques. Les mathématiques militaires ainsi comprises, dans leur environnement ludique et concret, deviennent un terrain sur lequel on peut même faire naître l’approche philosophique qui doit permettre, selon l’exposé de la République, de réformer l’enseignement mathématique. Nous ferons dès lors l’hypothèse que la représentation des tâches d’ordonnancement des troupes présentes dans les poèmes homériques sont susceptibles de nous permettre de réinterpréter les jeux mathématiques par lesquels l’arithmétique est introduite aux enfants dans un passage des Lois (VII, 819a8-c7).
