Livy's Preface is here interpreted referring to the dedication of a monument. Indeed, the presence of the gods does not amount to an epic allusion : it is necessary to the inauguration of a monumentum that the historian sets out for his readers, by which he makes the history of the Roman people accessible to an enlarged political community, resulting from the extension of Roman citizenship to all the free inhabitants of Italy.

La Préface de Tite-Live est interprétée ici en référence à la dédicace d'un monument. La présence des dieux ne saurait en effet se réduire à une allusion épique : ils sont nécessaires à l'inauguration du monumentum que l'historien propose à ses lecteurs, et par lequel il rend l'histoire du peuple romain accessible à une communauté politique élargie, issue de l'extension de la citoyenneté romaine à tous les habitants libres de l'Italie.
