This introduction sums up the steps followed throughout RUR III project. First, the common methodology used in the stages of the research is described, and the scientific questions raised are pointed out. Next, the principal definitions of the concepts used are given, particularly internationalization, which may be distinguished from international division of labour. Finally the main questions and hypotheses guiding our research are developed : the different stages of the internationalization process, the respective importance of agriculture, upstream and downstream industries in this process, and the role of the State.

Cette introduction retrace la démarche qui a été suivie tout au long du projet RUR III. Elle décrit tout d'abord la méthodologie commune qui a été utilisée à travers les trois étapes de la recherche et les débats scientifiques que cela a soulevés. Elle donne ensuite les principales définitions des concepts utilisés, et notamment celui d'internationalisation qui se différencie de la division internationale du travail. Elle formule enfin les principales questions et hypothèses qui ont guidé la recherche : sur les différentes étapes du processus d'internationalisation, sur l'importance respective de l'agriculture, des industries d'amont et d'aval dans ce processus, et sur le rôle de l'Etat.
