The following is an excerpt from Dafʿ al-iṣr ʿan kalām ahl Miṣr, ‘Removing the burden from the speech of the Egyptians’ (henceforth Dafʿ al-iṣr), written in the year 1014–1015/1606 by the Egyptian Yūsuf ʾAbū al-Maḥāsin Jamāl al-Dīn b.
