Philosophe, écrivain et compositeur, Adorno fut, à partir des années 1930, un compagnon de route du freudisme, déployant dans plusieurs livres et articles un sens aigu pour ce qui du discours analytique touche au réel. Ainsi, il rapproche le traitement du meurtre du père chez Freud de l’écriture du cauchemar chez Kafka. Fréquentant les analystes de l’Institut de Francfort et plus tard, ceux qui avaient, comme lui, dû fuir l’Allemagne vers l’exil californien, il défend la pensée de Freud contre le révisionnisme de Karen Horney et d’Erich Fromm. Comme Lacan mais avec une argumentation moins profonde, il reconnaît que la philosophie morale de Kant renvoie à Sade. Fidèle à l’esprit du découvreur de l’inconscient, il n’épargne pas la psychanalyse et sa pratique de sa critique solidaire, quand elle lui paraît parfois conservatrice et même réactionnaire.

Adorno and psychoanalysisPhilosopher, writer and composer, Adorno has accompanied the destiny of psychoanalysis since the 30’s, many of his books and essays evidence an acute understanding of the capacity of analytic discourse to theorize the real. He draws, for example, a striking parallel between Freud and Kafka. He compares how the former considers the mythic murder of the father as a real event with the literary equivalent of nightmare by the latter. Before the war, he frequented the psychoanalysts of the Franfurt Institue and later those who had chosen, as himself, the Californian exile. Understanding that some of Freud’s followers began to flatten Freud’s message, he defended his thinking against their fakes, for example those of Karen Horney and Erich Fromm. Earlier than Lacan but without the strength of his arguments Adorno recognizes that Kant’s moral philosophy evokes the excesses of Sade. Adorno’s loyalty to Freud did not prevent him from criticising certain points in the theory and praxis of psychoanalysis when he judged them conservative and even reactionary.
