Depuis 1995, suite à une réforme de l’administration de l’état civil, cette dernière refuse aux Égyptiens bahaïs le droit d’inscrire leur affiliation religieuse sur leurs papiers d’identité, les obligeant à déclarer une fausse identité religieuse. Certains d’entre eux ont intenté des procès contre l’administration. Le premier s’est conclu par une décision rendue en 2006 en leur faveur. Cassée en appel, cette décision, a engendré un débat très médiatisé qui interroge la place de la religion dans la définition de l’identité égyptienne.

Citizenship of the Baha’i : Egyptian identity on trialSince 1995, following a reform of the rules pertaining to the registry office, this administration has denied to Egyptians Baha’i the right to stipulate their religious affiliation on their identity papers, thereby forcing them to declare false religious identities. Some Baha’i have sued the administration. The first trial ended in 2006 with a judgment in favor of the claimants. This decision, reversed on appeal, gave rise to a widely publicized debate concerning the role of religion in the definition of Egyptian identity.
