Le contexte de développement des technologies de l’information et de la communication se révèle prégnant et quasi inextricable des avancées de la recherche en sciences de l’information et de la communication. En effet, les concepts d’usages, et d’usages sociaux, naissent dans les travaux des collègues, dont plusieurs sociologues, tous issus d’études de terrain, d’expérimentations particulières et inédites. Ces liens constituent des fondamentaux importants non pas à rappeler mais à exposer pour deux raisons majeures. Premièrement, mettre en évidence l’ancienneté de certains questionnements qui, parce qu’ils sont toujours d’actualité, se retrouvent à tort trop souvent rattachés au déploiement du numérique. Deuxièmement, montrer à quel point la notion d’usages s’affirme comme centrale au fil du temps mais dans des acceptions et définitions évolutives que son unité sémantique a tendance à masquer ou à atténuer. Enfin, ce travail est soutenu par un travail antérieur de constitution d’un corpus de références bibliographiques traitant la question des usages, de 1980 à 2010.

The context of development of Information and communication technologies shows itself significant, almost inextricable from the advances of researches in Sciences of the information and the communication. Indeed, the concepts of uses, social uses were born in the papers of colleagues, among which several sociologists, all stemming from studies of ground, from particular and unpublished experiments. All these links constitute fundamentals important not to remember but to expose for two major reasons. In the first place, to highlight the seniority of certain questionings, which because they are always current, find themselves, wrongly, too often connected with the deployment of the digital. Secondly, to show just how extent the notion of uses asserts itself as central over time but in meanings and evolutionary definitions which its semantic unit tends to mask or to mitigate. Lastly, this work is supported by a previous work of constitution of a French language bibliography corpus handling the question of the uses from 1980 till 2010.
