In the tradition of Marcel Mauss and Georg Simmel, David Le Breton analyses the body as a « total social fact ». His socio-anthropology of the body is at once a philosophical, symbolic and existential anthropology of being-in-the-world, an interactionist sociology of action and a critical sociology of modernity. By exploring all the multiple facets of his work on the body, emotions, sensations, identity, pain, risk, youth, etc., the article paints a moving portrait of David Le Breton, paying tribute to the most important sociologist of the body in France.
