The use of compasses to design the patterns seen in the openwork decoration of Vth and IVth century BC phalerae is well- known but, to date, the detailed working out of the stages in the development of these designs has frequently only received scant attention. Computer-based analyses, including visualisation, allow the processes involved to be explained more fully, and to envisage both the means by which the circles were subdivided and to consider the possibility of the use of standardized measures in laying out the compositions. By comparing the theoretical schemes and the actual objects as made it is sometimes possible to understand the technical choices made at the design stage. Finally, based on a possible link between a motif frequently found on the phalerae and Pythagorean number theory, it is possible to hypothesize a link between the colonies of Magna Graecia and north-east France.

L'utilisation du compas est bien identifiée dans les décors ajourés des phaléres des V-IVe s. av. J.-C, mais l'analyse détaillée des étapes de construction théorique du décor est parfois trop synthétique pour être suivie pas à pas. La programmation et la visualisation informatisées nous permettent d'esquisser une explication du processus tandis que l'on s'intéresse aux modes de subdivisions des cercles les uns par rapport aux autres sous l'angle en particulier des éventuelles unités de longueur sous-jacentes aux compositions. La comparaison entre les schémas et les objets réalisés permet parfois de comprendre les choix techniques des épures telles que nous les proposons. Enfin, les relations avec les colonies de Grande- Grèce sont envisagées au sujet d'une hypothèse liée à la numérologie pythagoricienne, dans un motif récurrent.
