La béatification (1987) et la canonisation (1998) d’Edith Stein, philosophe et carmélite d’origine juive, morte déportée à Auschwitz, ont choqué de nombreux juifs comme une entreprise de l’Eglise pour remettre en cause la spécificité de la Shoah. L’objet de cet essai est de montrer que la sainteté d’Edith Stein se tient au cœur d’une controverse religieuse au moment stratégique où Catholiques et Juifs tentent de progresser dans le « dialogue fraternel » ouvert par la déclaration Nosta Aetate du Concile de Vatican II.

A philosopher, a Carmelite of Jewish origin and a victim of the Nazis, who was assassinated in Auschwitz, Edith Stein was beatified (1987) and canonized (1998). Her holiness shocked many members of the Jewish communities, who perceived in the choice of the Church a desire to put the specificity of the Holocaust. This essay aims at showing that Edith Steins’ holiness stands at the center of a religious controversy, at the very moment when Catholics and Jews are attempting to establish a “fraternal dialogue” after the decisive turning point of the Second Vatican Council, and the declaration Nostra Aetate regarding the Jews.
