The French associative phenomenon, with eclectic objects, is unified by its statutory obligations, governed by the law of 1 July 1901. For some decades, organizations in this third sector, by analogy to public service and the market sector, have inevitably had to professionalize. This transformation does not go smoothly and many associative organizations are confronted with chronic critical processes. Our thesis presents an analysis of the associative phenomenon's social imagination grappling with contemporary management logics, through a case study conducted according to a clinical approach of the monograph, combining three-year participant observation and individual and collective life stories. In this thesis, we explore the associative institutional dimension through the modernization crisis of an international cooperation association. It shows that the founding logic, which governs the creation of an association, is undermined by the necessary imposition of managerial changes aimed at ensuring its financial security. These changes invalidate the symbolic dimension of the collective's practices and functioning. The clinical analysis of the critical process reveals the centrality of an associative institutional dimension based on a triple axiom: solidarity, democracy, and non-profitability.

Le phénomène associatif français, aux objets éclectiques, est unifié par ses obligations statutaires, régies par la loi du 1er juillet 1901. Depuis quelques décennies, les organisations de ce tiers-secteur, ainsi désigné en référence au service public et au secteur marchand, doivent inévitablement se professionnaliser. Cette transformation ne se fait pas sans heurts et nombre d'organisations associatives sont confrontées à des processus critiques chroniques. Notre thèse présente une analyse de l'imaginaire social du phénomène associatif à l'aune des logiques contemporaines de gestion, au travers d'une étude de cas menée selon une démarche clinique de la monographie, alliant observation participante de trois années et récits de vie professionnelle individuels et collectifs. Nous étudions dans cette thèse la dimension institutionnelle associative à travers la crise de modernisation d'une association de coopération internationale. Nous montrons que la logique instituante, qui préside à la création d'une association, est mise à mal par l'imposition de changements gestionnaires visant à sa sécurisation financière. Ceux-ci disqualifient la dimension symbolique des pratiques et du fonctionnement du collectif. L'analyse d'approche clinique du processus critique dévoile la centralité d'une dimension institutionnelle associative fondée sur un triple axiome : solidarité, démocratie et non-lucrativité.
