La thèse propose d’étudier le caractère apparemment paradoxal des représentations de Jésus-Christ entre le XIXe et le XXe siècles. L’hypothèse principale de notre recherche est que la figure du Christ constitue, même au-delà du tournant de la sécularisation, un dispositif métaphorique pleinement fonctionnel, dont il faut explorer la complexité afin de comprendre comment la modernité transforme le contenu et la forme de l’image sacrée. Notre travail montre que le motif de l’auréole, et la dialectique entre sa perte et sa récupération, constituent des outils critiques essentiels pour réfléchir à l’évolution du rôle de l’artiste moderne et aux transformations des éléments cultuels dans les représentations. La thèse retrace ensuite la permanence de la recherche du « vrai » visage du Christ, reconnu par les artistes modernes dans les traits laids et disharmonieux qui, à la suite des grandes tragédies du XXe siècle, apparaissent comme des caractéristiques partagées par une humanité imparfaite et souffrante. Enfin, notre recherche étudie le travail de la métaphore christique dans la sphère politique, selon une double perspective. L’objectif est de mettre en évidence le fonctionnement dialectique de ce dispositif qui, d’une part, favorise la consolidation de certaines structures de pouvoir, dans le contexte des religions dites politiques, et d’autre part, se révèle être un lieu critique qui permet de déconstruire les mêmes structures de pouvoir qu’il a contribué à renforcer. En explorant les thèmes de l’inflexion de l’auréole, de la recherche du visage authentique du Christ et de ses implications politiques, notre travail vise à montrer la dialectique entre la tension métaphysique et la confrontation avec la finitude dans l’art moderne.

This work aims to investigate an apparent paradox within the representations of Jesus Christ between the XIXth and the XXth century. The main hypothesis of our research is that the figure of Christ constitutes, even beyond the turn of secularization, a fully functional metaphorical device, the complexity of which we need to explore in order to understand how modernity transforms the content and form of the sacred image. Firstly, our work investigated the motif of the halo to show that the dialectic between its loss and its recovery constitutes a critical tool for reflecting on the evolution of the role of the modern artist and on the transformations of the cultic elements in representations. Secondly, the thesis traces the ongoing search for the “true” face of Christ, recognised by modern artists in the ugly and disharmonious traits that, following the great tragedies of the XXth century, appear as characteristics shared by an imperfect and suffering humanity. Finally, our research studies the work of the metaphor of Christ in the political sphere, from a double perspective. The aim is to highlight the dialectical functioning of this device which, on the one hand, favours the consolidation of certain power structures, in the context of the so-called political religions, and on the other hand, reveals itself as a critical site which allows the deconstruction of the same power structures that it has contributed to reinforce. By exploring the themes of the inflection of the halo, the search for the authentic face of Christ and their political implications, our work aims to show the dialectic between metaphysical tension and the confrontation with finitude in modern art.
