In the 1820s, the massive upcoming of books taken from aristocratic libraries during the revolutionary seizures led to a shift in bibliophilic taste, which promoted a retrospective approach; from this moment on, book collectors tended almost exclusively towards buying seventeenth and eigteenth-century editions. As a result, the presence of an ancient book-binding, as well-preserved as possible, became of vital importance. According to the kind of leather and the type of gilding involved, the binding could be compared to a window display able to convey to the informed amateur the historical identity of the volume enclosed in it. Whenever kept intact, an ancient book-binding is therefore likely to prepare or even programme a certain reception, encouraging its owner to focus on conservation issues. Old book-bindings can be regarded as keys to understanding the way in which nineteenth-century French bibliophiles used to collect editions from the Ancien Régime.

A partir des années 1820, et en lien avec l'arrivée massive d'ouvrages issus des confiscations révolutionnaires sur le marché du livre rare et précieux, la tendance des goûts en matière de bibliophilie prend une orientation rétrospective pour se focaliser essentiellement sur les XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Or, la présence d'une reliure ancienne et, idéalement, parfaitement conservée, joue à cet égard un rôle crucial. En effet, par l'ancrage historique que révèlent le type de peau et surtout le décor choisis, la reliure agit à la manière d'une vitrine supposée signaler à l'amateur averti l'identité temporelle du volume qu'elle recouvre. Annonçant et même imposant une certaine appréhension de l'objet-livre, orientée vers un idéal de conservation, la présence d'une reliure ancienne informe ainsi en profondeur la réception des éditions classiques au XIXe siècle.
