Décrire sans montrer. L’hypographè, une catégorie oubliée

Cette étude se penche sur la catégorie de l’ hypographè, exploitée par les philosophes et les rhéteurs grecs, qui semble avoir disparu du vocabulaire critique d’abord latin et, ensuite, néolatin et en langue vernaculaire. En fait, par les aléas de la traduction, les caractéristiques de l’ hypographè ont été absorbées par la definitio sive descriptio voire par la descriptio tout court, avec laquelle elle a fini par se confondre, du moins d’un point de vue lexical. Nous nous proposons d’étudier l’évolution de cette notion, pour en dégager les traits constitutifs qui la distinguent de la definitio proprement dite et de la descriptio, figure ostentatoire assimilée à l’ ecphrasis.

This study focuses on the category of hypographè, a notion treated by Greek philosophers and rhetoricians that seems to have disappeared from the critical lexicon of Latin at first, and subsequently of Neo-Latin and Vernacular. In fact, due to the vicissitudes of translation, the specific features of hypographè were absorbed by the definitio sive descriptio, if not even by the descriptio proper– so that, at least from a lexical point of view, the hypographè became finally confused with the latter. My aim is to study the evolution of this notion, showing the specific features that distinguish it both from the definitio proper, as well as from the descriptio assimilated to the ostentatious figure of ekphrasis.
