This overview will introduce the creation of academic "Sinologie" in early-19th-century France, present its major historical figures down to the late 20th century, summarily discuss contemporary questions of methodology and research tools, and name some of its main periodicals, reference works, and most recently produced websites and databases. The survey will focus on the subfield of French-language Taoist studies as one of the main determinatives in the historical development of Sinologie.
