The enactment of federal laws concerning archaeology in the United States and Canada came as a response to the looting of ancient native sites in both countries. While this article investigates who the looters were and what their motives could be, it also aims to provide insights into the various concerns the laws addressed, especially by comparing the management of the collections of Native artefacts held by the Canadian and American national museums.
