Avec un linéaire côtier d’environ 1000 km, dont 30% seulement est urbanisé, l’île de Beauté est un «territoire touristique en attente». Le tourisme de masse, qui s’est développé à partir des années 1960, a constitué en effet le vecteur majeur du réveil d’un nationalisme régional. Ce courant a pu légitimer le recours à la violence politique pour contrôler et limiter la bétonnisation du littoral. Depuis cette période, la société insulaire est agitée par un débat récurrent sur la meilleure adaptation possible du tourisme à l’insularité et à l’identité corses. Si la nécessité de préserver le «capital naturel» de cette île, sanctuaire d’une «Méditerranée originelle», semble aujourd’hui bénéficier d’un certain unanimisme, la réalité est cependant plus complexe et des intérêts divergents s’exposent au sein de la société insulaire. La rente foncière alimente désormais une économie touristique en proie à une indéniable «criminalisation».

The torments of tourism on the Island of Beauty The Island of Beauty, with roughly 1000 km of coastline and only 30% of it urbanized, is a «touristic territory awaiting». Mass tourism, which developed since the 60s, has been indeed the main vehicle of a regional nationalism awakening. This movement has justified the resort to political violence to control and limit the «concreting» of the littoral. Since then, the insular society has been agitated by a recurring debate on the best adaptation possible of tourism to insularity and Corsican identity. Preserving the «natural wealth» of this island, sanctuary of «the original Mediterranean», seems to benefit today from a certain unanimity, but the reality is nevertheless more complicated and diverging interests arise in the insular society. Today the ground rent nourishes a touristic economy in prey of an undeniable criminalization.
