Il est toujours délicat d’appréhender la distribution des dispositifs paroissiaux urbains sous l’Ancien Régime. Le tracé des limites paroissiales est parfois connu, rarement de manière synthétique. Il est toujours alambiqué et donc difficile d’accès. Il existe un document exceptionnel et original pour son époque. Le plan des paroisses de Cambrai, attribué à Olivier, et imprimé par Berthoud vers 1774, représente avec précision la fragmentation paroissiale qui s’observe souvent en milieu urbain. Il témoigne de l’ancienneté de l’équipement religieux de la ville qui s’est fixé au XIe siècle. Il révèle aussi les différentes phases d’expansion de la ville. Les curés et les paroissiens de Cambrai, à l’époque moderne, héritent d’un dispositif pastoral intangible dont la lecture leur paraît de moins en moins évidente. Le plan des paroisses est l’instrument de la contestation et des aspirations des curés à la clarification du réseau paroissial au XVIIIe siècle.

It is always a sensitive issue to try and make out the distribution of the urban parish network in the Ancien Régime. The location of the parish limits is sometimes known, but rarely from a synthetic point of view. It is always over-complicated and thus difficult to access. There exists a document that is exceptional and original for its time. The Cambrai parish map, attributed to Olivier, and printed by Berthoud around 1774, represents accurately the parish fragmentation that can often be observed in the urban environment. It testifies of the antiquity of the religious organization of the city which was established in the XIth century. It also reveals the several phases of expansion of the city. The curates and parishioners of Cambrai, in modern times, have inherited an intangible pastoral disposition that seems more and more difficult to read. This parish map serves as the major instrument in the contestation and the aspirations of the curates to simplify the parish network in the XVIIIth century.
Het is niet eenvoudig tijdens het Ancien Régime de omvang van een stadsparochie met zekerheid vast te stellen; preciese en directe gegevens zijn slechts zelden beschikbaar. Voor Kammerrijk bestaat er een buitengewoon document, toegeschreven aan Olivier en gedrukt door Berthoud ca 1774, een preciese plattegrond van de parochies van Kamerrijk die de fragmentering van de parochies weergeeft, een verschijnsel dat men vaak in een stad kan vaststellen. Dat getuigt van de ouderdom van de kerkelijke inplanting in de stad die tot stand kwam in de 11de eeuw en van de verschillende fasen van de uitbreiding van de stad. De pastoors en gelovigen erven bij het begin van de moderne tijd een onwrikbaar systeem dat zij niet meer begrijpen. De plattegrond van de parochies wordt in de 18de eeuw een voorwerp van bestwisting en van het verlangen van de pastoors naar meer klaarheid inzake het parochiaal netwerk.
