An analysis of the narrative organisation of the surviving decades of Livy’s work reveals the historian’s strong ideological and moral point of view on Roman history. Rome’s existence is conceived in biological terms, as a cyclic sequence of morally positive and negative periods. In Livy’s view, the major turning points in this sequence are represented by the advent of distinguished leaders, who mark the moment of Rome’s rebirth at the end of a period of decadence, or the apogee of her power, after which a new period of decadence begins.

L’analisi dell’organizzazione narrativa delle decadi superstiti suggerisce la potente prospettiva ideologica e morale di Livio sulla storia romana. L’esistenza di Roma è concepita in termini biologici, come una sequenza ciclica di ascesa e decadenza morale. Nella prospettiva liviana, i momenti di svolta di questa sequenza sono rappresentati dall’avvento di leader, che segnano un momento di rinascita dopo un periodo di decadenza o, viceversa, il momento culminante della potenza di Roma, che precede un nuovo periodo di decadenza.
