Être matérialiste en France au dix-huitième siècle, c’est convenir que la matière peut penser et c’est confier aux sciences et à l’athéisme des Lumières le combat contre les superstitions et la servitude, au nom des progrès de la Raison. Pour Diderot, vivre en matérialiste c’est se gouverner en jouant sa vie aux dés, au plan social comme au plan personnel. Les gestes d’improvisation privilégient l’événement sur la permanence et inventent en ménageant l’imprévu. Penser ce matérialisme, c’est tout autant le rêver en associant à la molécule de matière inquiète toujours déjà sensible et vivante l’image de l’infini ou du Tout de la formation des mondes à partir d’un écart hasardeux.
