C’est à la lumière de la personne ressuscitée du Christ qu’il faut chercher à mettre un contenu concret sous ces trois mots qui résumaient dans nos catéchismes la fin de notre temps et son au-delà : ciel, purgatoire, enfer. Le ciel, ou la demeure de Dieu, a été inauguré pour nous par la résurrection et l’ascension du Christ, qui siège à la droite du Père et nous intègre au corps dont il est la Tête. Il est le séjour actif d’une communauté de personnes vivant dans la découverte de commencements toujours nouveaux et dans une parfaite reconnaissance mutuelle. – Le purgatoire est le feu d’amour venant du même Christ et qui nous purifie de tout ce qui reste en nous d’obscurité pécheresse et nous écarte de la transparence limpide du séjour des élus. Il est une souffrance joyeuse. – L’Enfer est une création de l’homme qui refuse de manière lucide et définitive la lumière et l’amour du Christ et le don de l’Esprit. Il reste la conséquence toujours possible de l’enjeu dramatique de notre liberté, qui est « faculté de l’éternel ». Mais entre son hypothèse et sa réalité il y a toute l’initiative de l’amour du Christ qui veut que tous les hommes soient sauvés.

It is the light of the resurrected Christ that we need to look for the specifics about these three words that summed up in our catechisms the end of time and the world beyond: heaven, purgatory, hell. Heaven, or the realm of God, was inaugurated for us by the resurrection and ascension of Christ, who is seated at the right hand of the Father and takes us up into the body of which he is the Head. It is the active abode of a community of people living in the discovery of endless fresh starts and in perfect mutual recognition. – Purgatory is the fire of love, also coming from Christ, which purifies us of all that remains of sinful darkness in us and that keeps us apart from the utter transparency of the life of the elect. It is a joyful suffering. – Hell is the creation of humans who clearly and definitively reject the light and love of Christ and the gift of the Spirit. It is the consequence, always possible, of the dramatic struggle over our liberty, which is the “capacity for the eternal”. But between the hypothetical and the real lies the whole initiative of the love of Christ who wishes every human being to be saved.
