Ethnicity in Africa. The author seeks to re-examine the question of ethnicity (and even the national question) in today’s Africa by means of an analysis of the practical consequences of state policies based on ethnic politics. Arguing against John Lonsdale, Moffa maintains that a new (non-reductionist) Marxist approach can serve to highlight the important social questions which drive politics in contemporary Africa.

L’auteur se propose de retourner à l’analyse de la question de l’ethnicité (voire la question nationale) en Afrique par le biais d’une étude des conséquences pratiques d’une politique axée sur la différence ethnique. Reprenant l’argumentation de John Lonsdale, qu’il conteste vigoureusement, Moffa cherche à démontrer l’importance d’une analyse marxiste «non réductrice» du phénomène ethnique en Afrique.
