Writers’ and artists’ admiration for Schumann often stems from an ambivalent view of the life and work of a man whose music is both poetically and stylistically an enemy of unity and coherence. Robert Schumann, who dreamt of literature and poetry throughout his life, is a source of creation and aesthetic reflection for French and European writers and artists alike. To mention Schumann’s music in fiction, to use his music in film or in the performing arts, is to embed a remarkable universe of poetry within a work.
