A recent rescue excavation led to the discovery of an ancient urban area in the city center of Le Mans (Sarthe). In addition to two lanes and some craft buildings the area includes the course of an ancient stream, which structured the human occupation and determined the creation of a water pool identified as a sacred pond. This paper summarizes the first stages of reflection on how the site was organised and on the religious practices being performed.

Une fouille préventive récente (Inrap) a permis la mise au jour, dans le centre-ville du Mans, d’un quartier urbain antique. Il comprend, outre deux voies de circulation et quelques bâtiments fonctionnels, le passage d’un ancien ruisseau, qui a structuré l’occupation humaine et a déterminé l’implantation et l’aménagement d’une pièce d’eau identifiée comme un étang sacré. Cette contribution livre un premier état de la réflexion sur le fonctionnement du site et les pratiques religieuses qui s’y sont déroulées.
