La nouvelle traduction française de la Traumdeutung de Freud publiée en 2002 par J. Laplanche a soulevé les critiques. Cela nous donne l’occasion de confronter les opinions sur la question de ce que pourrait être une bonne traduction de l’œuvre de Freud. Serait-il préférable, comme l’a fait Laplanche et son équipe, de rester très près du lexique freudien et de restituer le champ sémantique des mots allemands ? Ou, devrait-on admettre des périphrases et des métaphores qui rendent les choses évidentes pour les Français ? Que penser des néologismes « désaide » ou « désirance » qui ont été choisi pour traduire hilflos et Sehnsucht dans la traduction dirigée par Laplanche? Les auteurs soulignent les risques et les avantages de ces deux sortes de traduction.

The new French translation of Freud’s Traumdeutung published in 2002 by J. Laplanche provoked criticism. It gives us opportunity to confront opinions on what could be considered as a good translation of Freud’s works. Would it be better, as did Laplanche and his translation team, to stay closer to the freudian lexicon and to restitute the semantic field of the German words ? Or should we admit circumlocutions and metaphors that make things obvious for the French? What about the neologisms « désaide » and « désirance» which were chosen to translate the German hilflos and Sehnsucht in the Laplanche’s translation ? The authors pointed out the risks or advantages of these two kinds of translation.
