In On Revolution Hannah Arendt dealt, among other subjects, with the authentic Machiavellian concern on the foundation of a permanent and durable body politic. According to her, revolutions are not mere changes, because they confront us directly with the problem of the relationship between beginning and constitution, freedom and permanence of the political realm. In this article I suggest that Arendt's analysis of revolution rectifies an aporia that resides in the center of her own concept of political action: it is because of its contingency, its uncertainty and evasiveness, that action is doomed never to find the institutions necessary for its permanence. At the end of my text I suggest that this failure of action can be overcome if one preserves the beginning by constantly revisiting it in order to augment the initial act.

Dans Sur la révolution, Hannah Arendt expose, dès le début du texte, l'authentique souci machiavélien de la fondation d'un corps politique permanent et durable. Selon elle, les révolutions ne sont pas des simples changements, parce qu'elles nous confrontent directement avec le problème du rapport entre commencement et constitution, liberté et permanence de l'espace politique. Dans cet article, je propose que cette analyse qu'Arendt fait des révolutions rectifie une aporie inscrite au coeur même de son propre concept d'action politique : c'est à cause de sa contingence, de son caractère incertain et évasif, que l'action reste condamnée à ne pas trouver les institutions nécessaires pour sa permanence. À la fin du texte, je soutiens que cet échec de l'action peut être surmonté si on préserve le commencement en y retournant afin d'augmenter l'acte initial.
