The concept of Bahujan literature is based on the sum total of the literary contribution of a writer. Hence, it also has place for Dwij writers with an unflinching commitment to the cause of the deprived communities. As we have been arguing in the columns of FORWARD Press, the concept of Bahujan literature is a huge umbrella, under which Dalit, Tribal and women’s literature will flourish. Additionally, critical evaluation of the literature and shared values of the OBCs, Pasmandas and nomadic castes should also be attempted. Only this concept of Bahujans would be able to push the elitist literature to the margins.

यह आलेख भारतीय साहित्य में उभर रही बहुजन अवधारणा को रेखांकित करता है। इस लेख में बताया गया है कि "बहुजन साहित्य का अर्थ है– अभिजन के विपरीत बहुजन का साहित्य और उनकी वैचारिकी। प्रगतिशील- मार्क्सवादी विचारधारा में जो ‘जन’ है, ‘बहुजन’ उसकी अगली कड़ी भी है। मार्क्सवाद के ‘जन’ का अर्थ भारत के सामाजिक-यथार्थ के संदर्भ में न सिर्फ अस्पष्ट और अनिश्‍चित बना रहता है, बल्कि वह हमारे सांस्कृतिक मंतव्यों को प्रकट नहीं करता। जब हम ‘जन’ में ‘बहु’ प्रत्यय जोड़ते हैं तो इससे बना शब्द हिंदुस्तानी परिप्रेक्ष्य में वैचारिक और दार्शनिक रूप से भी जीवंत बन उठता है। यह हमें भारत की श्रमणवादी धारा के दार्शनिकों, कौत्स, बुद्ध, मक्खली गोशाल, अजित केशकंबली आदि की वैज्ञानिक चेतना से जोड़ देता है और उनके दर्शन को समकालीन आवश्यकता के अनुरूप विकसित करने के लिए प्रेरित करता है। “बहुजन” में बहुलता का भाव है। नए भाषा संकेतों का सहारा लेकर कहें तो यह जन + (जन प्लस) भी है। जन+ के अर्थ में यह पिछले दो दशक से पश्चिम में चर्चित हो रही उत्तर-मानववाद जैसी धारणााओं को तार्किक दिशा देने में भी सक्षम है।
