Notes on the geographical invention of the Mediterranean. Based on a study of the first three "Géographies Universelles", this paper deals with the emergence of the Mediterranean area in the scientific research. The notion of a Mediterranean area began to emerge in the early 19th century, especially in the works of K. Malte-Brun. However, it was only in 1876 that E. Reclus adopted a scientific approach to the geohistorical role of the Mediterranean Sea. A radical shift in emphasis, focusing on the hinterland rather than the sea, can be observed during the interwar years among the followers of P. Vidal de la Blache, providing the new paradigm on which F. Braudel's thesis was based. This paper will explore the genealogy of the geographical representations of the Mediterranean, with a view to questioning the origins of our scientific discourse on this subject, at once so familiar and so elusive.

L'invention scientifique de la Méditerranée est examinée à partir des textes issus des trois premières "Géographies Universelles". Au début du XIXe siècle, les prémices d'une "aire méditerranéenne" se mettent en place comme on peut l'observer dans l'œuvre de Konrad Malte-Brun. Mais Elisée Reclus lance en 1876 la première réflexion scientifique sur le rôle géohistorique de la mer Méditerranée. Dans l'entre-deux guerres, les vidaliens centrent leur objet sur l'espace terrestre : cette représentation servira de base à la thèse de Fernand Braudel. Cette analyse conduit à émettre des hypothèses sur une généalogie des représentations géographiques de la Méditerranée et invite à interroger notre héritage conceptuel sur cet objet si évident et si flou.
