L’Introduction que rédigent Crowley et Jobling permet de comprendre l’ambition méthodologique d’une construction historique se concentrant volontairement sur la période 1800-1995, en Europe. Interrogeant la position du design graphique aux périphéries de l’histoire de l’art, de l’histoire du design, des études visuelles et de l’histoire culturelle, Crowley et Jobling tracent une trajectoire intellectuelle s’intéressant un peu moins aux figures et aux mouvements qu’au sens que prennent les représentations à l’ère de leur fabrication et de leur circulation de plus en plus large et rapide. Les acteurs et les actrices, les évolutions techniques, les courants et autres -ismes, servent de toile de fond à une approche sur la production des signes et leur réception. La dimension à la fois thématique et chronologique de l’ouvrage prend tout son sens dans l’assemblage d’essais qui ambitionnent de donner à voir les contours d’un territoire difficilement réductible à ses premières définitions. Crowley and Jobling’s Introduction allows us to understand the methodological ambition of a historical construction that deliberately focuses on the period 1800-1995 in Europe. Questioning the position of graphic design at the fringes of art history, design history, visual studies and cultural history, Crowley and Jobling trace an intellectual trajectory that is less interested in figures and movements than in the meaning representations take on in the time of their manufacture and their increasingly wide and rapid circulation. The actors and actresses, the technical developments, the movements and other -isms, serve as a backdrop to a series of observations favouring the understanding of the production of signs and their reception. The thematic and chronological structure makes sense in a gathering of essays that aim to show the contours of a territory that remains difficult to reduce to its initial definitions.
