Reviews of the previous interpretation of the name this god, which is known from the Rigveda onwards. His alternative name means clearly 'master of the formulation' (bráhman-, neuter). A new etymology is proposed, based on the combination of pati- 'master' with the genitive singular of an ancient stem allomorph of bráhman-.
