What is the place of democracy in Marx and Engels's political thinking? It took shape in 1848 ad the theory of the permanent revolution and the dictatorship of the proletariat. Yet, it can also be seen as the theory of the « conquest of democracy ». Violent revolution is necessary on « the continent » but the anglo-saxon world might experience a peaceful transition. The « permanent revolution » is indeed characteristic of the nineteenth century (1789-Third Republic) but it is one and the same (democratic) revolution which does not develop into a communist revolution.
