My Encounters with Romano šukar lavibenBy describing the origins and development of literature written by the so-called Slovak Roma in the former Czechoslovakia and contemporary Czech Republic, the article, originally written in 1999, presents an unusually detailed insight into the emergence of Romani literature in the region, its sources and common characteristics. The article also reveals the strong personal relation of the late Milena Hübschmannová (who tragically died in September 2005) to the Romani writers in the region and her contribution to their emergence as writers and the development of their literary forms.Starting with the description of the production of different genres of Romani traditional oral culture at collective gatherings of the traditional communities of the Slovak Roma, noting in particular the special social, cultural, socio-therapeutic, and integrative functions of traditional oral forms (fairy tales, songs and narrations of everyday life), Milena Hübschmannová explains the emergence of Romani literature in Czechoslovakia in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s as a direct reaction of the Roma to the communist attempts at their state-controlled assimilation. In her view, the disappearance of the traditional oral culture with all its functions vital to the existence of the local Romani communities is compensated by the emergence of a new type of « art of beautiful words » ( šukar laviben), Romani literature, by people who search for the lost traditional ways of communication, self-identification and collective reassuring.Poetic and prosaic works by Tera Fabiánová serve as a perfect example of a writer’s motivation to write stemming from the need to compensate for the lost communication with the writer’s « lost home ». Hübschmannová provides a detailed analysis of Fabiánová’s poetic as well as prosaic works, revealing touching details of the creation of her first poem, « Av manca čhajori » (Come with me, my sweet), and traces its journey through the history of the Romani literature in former Czechoslovakia. Other writers who come under Hübschmannová’s consideration in the text include llona Ferková, Andrej Giňa, Olga Giňová, Jan Horváth, Vlado Oláh, Emil Ščuka, and Olga Vnadová.While respecting the individuality of the existing Romani writers, Hübschmannová argues that several common features can be traced in the Romani literary production. The most important include, in her eyes : originality of literary forms, spontaneity of narration, a specific narrative tone described as laughing through tears, an unexpected absence of a salient point, and an ethno-emancipatory load. Driving on her personal experience, Hübschmannová also suggests there is a difference in the reception of the Romani literary works between Roma and non-Roma audiences. She explains the difference between the Romani reaction by the lack of education in « classical literary » tradition, and different life experience as a marginalized minority and, last but not least, the sensitivity to specific words, stemming from the Romani cultural tradition and the belief in the magic power of words.
