From 2017 to 2020, we coordinated the development of a Japanese textbook for first and secondyear LLCER students of the Japanese Studies Department of Inalco (Paris). In this article, wepresent this project and discuss several issues such as the treatment of language variation, thechoice of lexicon, the contextualization of activities and the difficulty of designing representativeexample sentences.
