Résumé En

The opening lines of the Wagenseil recension of Toledot Yeshu place Jesus in the time of the Hasmonean king Alexander Jannaeus (r. 103–76 BCE), about one hundred years before his traditional date of birth. This alternative dating of Jesus can be inferred from the Talmud (b. Sotah 47a) where “Yeshu” is said to be a disciple of Joshua b. Perahyah during Jannaeus’ persecution of the Pharisees. By the Middle Ages, this alternative chronology had become a fixed part of Jewish anti-Christian polemic. This paper traces the development of this theme and attempts to explain its origin.
