Despite its simplicity the proper noun represents an enigma. Does it have a meaning distinct from the object it refers to, or is the former identical with that which has the name to which the sign refers directly ? This difficulty culminates in the phenomenological theory of meaning, since Husserl, while recognising the «direct» character of the intention of the proper noun, nonetheless attributes to it a «meaning» distinct from the object, and, in doing so, paradoxically seems to introduce a mediation into an objective reference that seemed immediate. After his youthful texts and foundational works (Logische Untersuchungen ; Vorlesungen über Bedeutungslehre), in which Husserl did not succeed in distinguishing the content from the proper meaning of the object referred to, did the research manuscripts brought together in volume XX/II of Husserliana finally succeed in «thinking» the meaning of the proper noun, against the theories of direct reference ? Is this meaning something that can be conceptually defined and distinguished from the object referred to, without casting doubt on the «direct» character of naming ? Or does it give itself to be lived in sensible experience through contact with the things themselves with which it ends up being confused ? (transl. by J. Dudley).

Malgré son apparente simplicité, le nom propre représente une énigme. A-t-il une signification distincte de V objet qu’il désigne, ou bien celle-ci se confond-elle avec le porteur du nom auquel ce signe ferait directement référence ? Cette difficulté culmine dans la théorie phénoménologique de la signification, puisque Husserl, tout en reconnaissant le caractère «direct» de la visée du nom propre, lui attribue néanmoins un «sens» distinct de l’objet, et, ce faisant, semble introduire paradoxalement une médiation dans une référence objective qui semblait immédiate. Après les textes de jeunesse et les ouvrages fondateurs (Recherches logiques ; Sur la théorie de la signification), où Husserl ne parvenait pas à distinguer le contenu de la signification propre et l’objet visé, les manuscrits de recherche réunis dans le volume XX/II des Husserliana ont-ils enfin réussi à «penser» le sens du nom propre, contre les théories de la référence directe ? Ce sens est-il quelque chose qui se laisse conceptuellement définir et distinguer de l’objet désigné, sans remettre en cause le caractère «direct» de la nomination ? Ou bien se donne-t-il à vivre dans l’expérience sensible, au contact des choses mêmes avec lesquelles il finirait par se confondre ?
