Antoine Guillaume, « Sistemas complejos de movimiento asociado en las lenguas Takana y Pano: perspectivas descriptiva, tipológica e histórico-comparativa », HAL-SHS : linguistique, ID : 10670/1.pcp42c
A remarkable characteristic recently identified in the verbal morphology of Takanan languages is their complex systems of “associated motion” suffixes (Guillaume 2013). This category, initially documented in some aboriginal languages of Central Australia (Koch 1984; Wilkins 1991; Dixon 2002), corresponds to grammatical morphemes which are used with non-motion verbs to convey that the action expressed by the verb is associated with a backgrounded motion. The motion is characterized, among other things, by its temporal relationship with the action in the verb (V), whether it is prior (e.g., ‘go and V’), concurrent (e.g., ‘V while doing’) or subsequent (e.g. ‘V and go’), and by its path specifications (e.g., ‘go and V’, ‘come and V’, etc.). In this paper, I show that complex systems of associated motion are also found in Panoan languages, although they have been described under different names, and provide a comparison between the systems of the two families. This study contributes to a better understanding of the verbal morphology of the languages in both families and to the emerging typology of associated motion. The paper also lays the foundation for a future comparative-historical study that may bring a new perspective to the debate surrounding the possible relation between the Takanan and Panoan families, whether their similarities are due to a common ancestor or the result of linguistic contact.
