The article recapitulates various stages in the history of the notion of Schwärmerey. It was originally used in the religious polemics of early Lutheranism to demonise spiritualist opponents. Gradually, its meaning evolved to designate a form of delirium that inhibits judgment and encloses the subject in an imaginary world. Wieland’s novel describes such an outburst of madness and proposes to cure the hero in the spirit of the Enlightenment by bringing him back to the path of nature and experience.
