Hofmannsthal’s desperate attempt to elaborate and perpetuate a common Austrian culture just at the very moment of its political destruction has always been interpreted as the testimony of his conservative turn. The role of the interpretative canon as foundation of the Austrian identity in Hofmannsthal’s aesthetical programme is the center of the present article.
