Anlässlich des 200. Todesjahres von E. T. A. Hoffmann veröffentlichten die Gründer des Typhon-Verlags Dans la nuit d’E.T.A. Hoffmann (2022) in ihrer Reihe „ Les hallucinés“ (Die Halluzinierten). In diesem Aufsatz wird der Platz dieser illustrierten Neuauflage in der umfangreichen französischen Hoffmann-Rezeption untersucht, für die Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzer sowie Illustratorinnen und Illustratoren als bevorzugte Vermittlungsfiguren fungierten. Untersucht wird besonders die Fähigkeit von Tristan Bonnemains Zeichnungen, zu den Bildlinien des Unbestimmten zurückzukehren und gleichzeitig einzigartige und moderne Entwürfe zur Illustration eines der meist illustrierten Autoren der deutschen Literatur anzubieten.

This article, based on Dans la nuit d’E. T. A. Hoffmann, the new illustrated edition of Hoffmann’s tales, published by Editions Typhon in November 2022, will present the work and examine its place in the history of the author’s global reception. As translators and illustrators played a major role in importing Hoffmann’s work to France, Philippe Forget’s translations and Tristan Bonnemain’s ink drawings will be examined in the light of Hoffmann’s French legacy. It will also analyse the power of Tristan Bonnemain’s drawings to return to the pictorial lines of the gothic, the fantastic and the grotesque genres to enhance the tales of one of the most illustrated authors in German literature. Are his illustrations merely figurative or do they actively contribute to the creation of the fantastic grotesque aesthetic as it appears in his tales ?
